Challenger Brand
A set of asymmetric strategies for brands that are not the category leader and cannot win by matching the leader's resources.
Adam Morgan, Eating the Big Fish (1999)
What it does
A set of asymmetric moves for the brand that is not the leader: reframe the category, take a side, use symbolic acts, concentrate force on a narrow front.
When it breaks
Backfires if you are the leader — challenger posture is the market leader's most expensive mistake. Note also that Avis “We try harder” is the pre-framework archetype Morgan draws on, not a case of his method.
Case
Aldi UK's “Like Brands, Only Cheaper” is textbook challenger execution — using the leader's own brands as the comparison frame rather than competing on Aldi's terms. It took the Grand Prix at the 2019 Effie Awards Europe.
