Method

A tier is a claim about evidence, not about usefulness. A Folklore tool can be the right tool in the room; it just should not be the thing you point at when someone asks why.

The three tiers

Evidence tier: Law

Law 20 of 79

Replicated across categories by independent teams. To argue against it you need data, not an opinion.

Evidence tier: Frame

Frame 39 of 79

Not true or false — scaffolding. Its value is forcing a question you would otherwise skip.

Evidence tier: Folklore

Consulting or book-born, widely used, thinly evidenced. Fine as shared language; poor as a basis for a decision.

The tier is assigned to the claim the tool makes, not to the tool's popularity. Several of the most widely taught entries here sit in Folklore. That is the finding, not an oversight.

Corrections log

Three claims that circulate widely were found to be wrong or incomplete during fact-checking. They are published here rather than quietly fixed.

  1. 01

Cirque du Soleil is the standard Blue Ocean success story.

Cirque du Soleil filed for bankruptcy protection in June 2020. The strategy analysis is not thereby wrong, but a case study that stops in 2005 is telling you half a story.

  2. 02

Janna Systems' sale price is widely repeated in Category Design write-ups.

The figure circulated in secondary write-ups does not match the reported transaction. Corrected against the filing.

  3. 03

Fluent devices are commonly attributed to a single author.

The concept has a longer and more distributed history than the popular attribution suggests. Attribution corrected.

How the cases were sourced

Every entry carries one case with a link to a source that can be checked. Where a primary source exists — the original paper, the filing, the transcript — it is preferred over the write-up that summarises it. Where only a secondary source was found, that is what is linked, and those entries are the ones still being worked.

Two entries have no independent case at all: they are marked as such rather than padded with a vendor testimonial. An empty column is more useful than a decorative one.

If something here is wrong, the correction is welcome and will be logged on this page rather than edited away.

Scope

79 tools across 9 questions. The index is organised by the question a practitioner is stuck on, not by discipline, because nobody arrives looking for "a segmentation framework" — they arrive not knowing who buys.
